Swamp Classic 02/22/2014 - 02/23/2014 Race Wrap-Up

Pictures by Velo Mom Cheryl Everett

RedEye Velo had a good showing at the 2014 Swamp Classic in Gainesville FL. The following the race reports that I received and also my own insightful observations.

Cat 1/2
Jamey and Donny raced with Jamey getting in a break and ending up in sixth place, Donny also broke away from the main field landing a 12th place finish.

Cat 3
Jason Davis and Chris Marino raced Cat 3 putting in a lot of attacks trying to get into a break. Jason Davis sent in his race report, " You could probably see how my race went. I was aggressively trying to get in a breakaway with the guy that eventually won, Owen Schott. I was in every move except the winning one. When they got away I was boxed in and couldn't move. Sometimes you're riding great and super strong but it just doesn't work out. I decided to skip the crit with the terrible conditions. We both know how hard it can be to come back from a crash and it wasn't worth the risk. Good racing on your end, nice to see you up there at the finish."

Cat 4

The Wizard strikes again taking the top spot. Instead of Brian on the podium (he did not race, he was at ROTC) we were well represented by Connor Everett taking an impressive 3rd. I was pretty impressed with Connor's sprint finish, about 100m out Connor and I were  boxed in together, then a hole opened up and according to Training Peaks Connor held 910 watts for the next 100m to the finish line earning him a podium spot. As for me, being 44, not being 105 pounds, and not having a 19.11 P/W ratio, I landed a respectable 12th.

Jason McArthur reports that we had, "Beautiful conditions, warm but not too hot and NO RAIN. Race was very hectic with the race official stopping our race once because people weren't following the double yellow line rule. Then, our field was neutralized to let the pros pass us, only for us to catch them on the next lap. After the confusion of splitting the groups was taken care of, our last lap went by pretty fast. I was in poor position in the last 1k and was unable to move up for the sprint finish, resulting in me getting boxed in and finishing 19th. Felt ok, and leaned yet again how important positioning is in 50+ man fields."

Cat 5
Davis Bell and AJ raced, I'm not sure what happened with AJ, but Davis said he wheel was almost swiped coming into the finish and he had to brake hard, which put him out of it.

50+ Masters Race
Pete reports, "The race had a large field, with about 50 starters.  It was a good race, with average speed of nearly 24 mph.  At the 18 mile mark, I attacked and went up the road solo.  Built a 30 second gap with hopes that the controlling teams in the race would launch some folks to join me.  A small group did make it up to the break, but were not interested in working which resulted in the break getting caught by the bunch at mile 21.   From there, I settled in, managed attacks and stayed with the lead group which was now down to about 30 racers.   Two folks got away late, and the field set up for a sprint for third.   I finished in the field.  It was a fun race on an interesting course."

Trailer Update

Kevin and I picked up the trailer tonight from Sign.a.Rama, they did a beautiful job and took about $600 off the total price for us. So, if you have some promotion stuff you want to get done, be sure to give them a shot at your business.

Kevin and I are taking back to Lee Sales to build out the inside and we hope to have it at Chain of Lakes this weekend.

Brian Sciba showing some great early season form

On a raining and cold afternoon in Dade City, FL Brian Sciba showed some great early season for with a 3rd place podium finish. Brian has been really dedicated and focused on his training in the off season and it is showing with two great races already this season. I'm sure he will be on top of the podium soon.

DEVELOPING: Although, no formal charges have been brought against the Cat 4 winner, there has been murmurings that the Wizard rider used magic to secure victory. When asked, Wizard's coach, Gandolf refused to comment about his rider's alleged performance enhancing use of magic. USA Cycling President and CEO, Steve Johnson responds to the growing concern with performance enhancing magic and issued a press release stating that they are working with the UCI regarding proposed changes in the UCI and USADA’s policy on what level of magic will be allowed in sanctioned races.

UPDATE: 2nd place Kia-Naple Cyclery cyclist claims that he heard the the Wizard rider utter, "Impedimenta" (Harry Potter's spell to impede progress of an opponent) while wiggling his right hand. He is adamant that as soon as the Wizard rider said, "impedimenta" his legs felt like concrete. When asked if he saw a wand, he said, "I can't say for sure, but I thought I saw a wand or stick in his sleeve.

Using the photo enhancing power of REV's 286 power computer with 4MB of RAM we were able to zoom in on the Wizard's arm. Boy were we surprised! Although this is not conclusive evidence and it may be disputed as "credible," it does seem like the Wizard team may be using performance enhancing magic (PEM).

2.8 & 2.9 Dade City and Race Report & Chainbuster Taco Stand Race Report

Saturday, February 8th

Cold rainy day of racing.

Cat 1/2
Jamey and Donny said their race was fast and hard. Jamey came in midpack and Donny supervised from the back of the peloton.

Cat 3
Jason D and Trevor raced well, Trevor went off the front early and got pulled back later on.

Cat 4
Brian had a great race claiming a podium spot, he rode smart and strong. Connor and Dan K. held tough and finished in the pack. Jason Mc rode strong, but got spit out the back on one of the second lap's hills. Boo and Mark visions of glory ended on the last hill of the first lap.

It was fun being out there with so many REV guys, looking forward to Gainsville.

Will post Sunday's results when I get them.

On the mountain bike front Tom and Graham raced, here are there submitted results:

Graham and Tom raced the Chainbuster Taco Stand 6 hr mtb endurance race in Lawrenceville, Ga yesterday. Graham was 3rd in the men's open 2's and Tom was 4th in the Grandmasters division.
Way to go guys.

Sunday, February 9th

Our Cat 4s were the only racer in the crit: Connor, Brian, Dan, and Jason Mc.

Cheryl submitted: "Connor had an awesome race today at the Race for Humanity in Dade City, FL! Super proud of him for his 4th place finish in the Cat4 Criterium. They averaged 25 mph for 50 minutes!!! Gonna be a great year!!!"

Jason McArthur submitted: "I didn't have any legs left from yesterday. Stayed in for a lap and 1/2 and pulled. Metronome guys hammered it from the start, and all of us were in bad positions in the back. Connor was the only one who made it to the main group and he was stuck on the back the whole race."

From what I can extrapolate from my other conversations is both Brian and Dan did not have good position and missed the break. I guess the real estate agents are right, "Location, location, location."

Brian Sciba diving into the corner.

Dan Korecky looking to make a move.

2014 Florida State Junior 9-14 Road Race Championship Announcement

2014 Florida State Junior 9-14 Road Race Championship Announcement
The FBRA would like to announce and thank TopView Sports for accepting an offer to host the 2014 Junior 9-14 Florida State Road Race at the Pinellas Park event on March 30. It was the desire of the FBRA to follow how USA Cycling Nationals are held on a closed course to increase the safety of the younger junior racers. The FBRA has requested the race director hold this Junior 9-14 State Championship race during a more prominent time slot during the race day to feature our junior racers. This should make for a great weekend of junior racing with Tampa hosting all categories of junior racing on Saturday, March 29.

The 2014 Junior 15-18 Florida State Road Race will still be held at the Martin County course on the May 31 - June 1 weekend.

What's this another change for this weekend's race?

In an effort to please as many riders as possible we extended the length of both the Women's 1-3 race and the Mas 35+B race to 51 miles. Doing this created some minor times changes which are reflected on the updated flyer. The new times are: Mas 50-60 9:00 Wom 1-4 9:05 (WOM 4=34 miles) Mas A 11:30 Mas B 12:00 Pro 1-2 2:00 Cat 5 2:10 Cat 3-4 2:45 http://www.floridacycling.com/flyers/humanity14.pdf Please also remember to be mindful of your trash at the race venue and pick up after yourself. And please no littering on the course. Also only use the Portable Bathroom facilities provided, The orange groves are not bathrooms... Thanks for making the Race for Humanity Road Race the biggest race in Florida year after year.

Race times for Dade City have been updated.
