TALLY WORLD CRIT CHAMPIONSHIP

Register at: https://www.usacycling.org/register/2014-2445

RedEye Velo is having a fun crit and dinner with Gord Fraser fundraiser for the Tallahassee Junior Cyclist Development Program at the fairground on Thursday, July 17.

Yes, that Gord Fraser - the Tour de France competitor. Yeah, one of the best sprinters in the World. He's seen it all - the good, the bad and the ugly. This will be fun! It all takes place on Thursday, July 17th. The event will be held at the North Florida Fair Grounds and the winner will get a Championship jersey. Here are some things we want you to know:

  • We want you to be there! We need you there!
  • This event will help defray the cost of the Junior Camp.
  • The cost is $50. That puts you in the race for the Tally Worlds Championship jersey, and it gets you dinner with Gord afterward.
  • Bring friends and family for the dinner, just $20.
  • The dinner will be awesome. Gord will tell stories from the peloton and he will entertain you with his wit and wisdom.
  • Gord is really funny and insightful.
  • Seriously, we want you to join us for this.

Y'all, Gord is a Canadian cycling legend, a three-time Olympian and four-time Commonwealth Games participant. He was the 2004 Canadian national road race champion. In 2006, Gord retired from professional cycling after racing four seasons for the Health Net Pro Cycling Team. He then went on to be a directeur sportif with Team Type 1 in 2009, and in 2010 he joined UnitedHealthcare-Maxxis as a directeur sportif. In 2011 he became Director Sportif for the team. He has raced alongside every cycling star in the books. Oh yeah, and he raced in the Tour de France.

Florida State Crit Championship Race Report: Blood, Guts, and Glory

Camp RedEye
It was a smokin' hot weekend out in Jacksonville for the Florida State Crit Championships. We had another good presence representing RedEye Velo and Tallahassee with seven juniors and four adults racers and most importantly our RedEye Velo friends and family.

Brian and Connor
Juniors:
  • Price Edewaard
  • Cody Elliott
  • Madison McNees
  • Brain Sciba
  • Connor Everett
  • Jackson Griffin

Florida State Crit Championships - Sunday: Age Groups (Submitted by Mark McNees)

Dan Korecky after his crash
Cat4 was an ugly race with racers riding above their ability resulting in many crashes. The race went out at a fast pace with corner 1 proving to be a Red Cross donor station. It was on corner 1 on the second lap where Dan Korecky and Davis Bell went down hard with several other racers; I was very fortunate to make it through.
Davis Bell (104) showing amazing toughness getting back in the race after his crash

Mark McNees on his ill-fated breakaway
The race never settled down, so with 4 to go I decided to attack after everyone sat up after sprinting for the premium. I decided I would rather be off the front or off the back, but I didn't want to ride in the peloton any more.

Corner 1 strikes again
After I got caught about a lap later, I came around corner 1 and saw the aftermath of yet another crash, which unfortunately had our friend "birthday boy" Michael Mace and Steve Mace on the asphalt.

Brian Sciba

Cat3 lined up with Jason Davis, Connor Everett, and Brian Sciba. I was preoccupied with taking patching up Davis and Dan, but what I did catch was a pretty fast race out of the gate. It looked pretty steady, with Brian Sciba hanging tough in the front of the peloton.
Jason Davis

From my perspective, it looked like Jason Davis settled in mid-pack, perhaps looking to make his move in the sprint finish, since it did not look like anything was going to get away.

Florida State Crit Championships - Sunday: Age Groups (Submitted by Jason Davis)

Davis "Centaur" Bell with 2nd
Davis sat in the field while small attacks went up the road and came back. He was sore from his crash the day before so he didn't want to mix it with the breakaways. Came down to a field sprint with some of the 40+ guys really flying and Davis was able to pull out 2nd in his age group, 35+. Solid day of racing for the middle aged crew

Masters A was very fast as expected. 30 min in a break got away. I tried over the course of 2 laps to bridge across solo. I was close when Grant Potter bridged to me. I thought we could work together to get there but he attacked me and I couldn't hang after my big effort. Went back to the main field and battled for position until the sprint. Still had good legs and pulled out 5th in 35+.

Florida State Crit Championships - Sunday: Age Groups (Submitted by Brian Sciba)

Price Edewaard
Cody Elliott 3rd
After temperatures well over the century mark on Saturday afternoon, it was nice to race early morning under a bit of cloud cover. While still hot, the conditions for Sunday's races were much better than for the CAT races. Juniors 9-14 raced first and team RedEye was represented by Cody Elliott, Price Edewaard, Tyler Griffin, and Jackson Griffin. The race was 25 minutes and the field spread out quickly, but all of the juniors raced hard. Cody earned a podium spot, finishing 3rd in the 9 -10 year old group. Price and Tyler worked together throughout the race and finished 5th and 6th in the 11 - 12 year old field. Jackson gave a valiant effort, pulling in numerous breaks and acting as the field work-horse among the 13 - 14 year olds, coming a crossed the line in 5th.

Madison McNees 2nd
The 15 - 18 year olds saw a field heavily dominated by the very strong Interactive Metronome team from Miami. Representing team RedEye was Connor Everett, Madison McNees and Brian Sciba. While the older group was started 10 seconds ahead of the 15 - 16 year olds, the gap was short lived as Metronome controlled the field to allow the groups to merge. The remainder of the race consisted of the men's field held mostly together with two older Metronome riders well off the front and eventually lapping the field. Connor and Brian stayed in the field and put in many efforts to keep additional breaks from success and finishing 4th and 5th in their age group in the field sprint. Madison McNees held strong in the women's field finishing atop the podium in second.

Congratulations to all of the racers who represented team RedEye well!

Race Report: Georgia Crit Championships Macon GA

Truly a beautiful day for racing. Velo Mom extraordinaire, Kelly Sciba, Brian Sciba, Price Edewaard, Eric "Boo" McNees, and Coach Mark McNees left Tallahassee at 5AM to race up in Macon GA. Jason Davis and Graham Gillis drove up on their own a little latter.

Brian raced a very competitive Juniors 15-18 field with several 1/2s in the peloton and the Cat 4 crit. He did extremely well in both races, if I remember correctly he was 4th in the junior race and 8th in Cat 4. Brian continues to show tremendous gains and race presence, it is only a matter of time before we start seeing him on the top podium spot.

Coach Mark raced the 45+ Masters 1-4 after sitting in for the first third of the race he found a short lived break, a few laps later he found himself in a four person break that was pulled back in a lap or so later. His best chance came when he attacked with 3 laps to go and kept away for two laps with another racers until the bell lap when they got caught and spit out the back.

Price rode like a seasoned pro hitting the corners with precision angles and form. The race start practices paid off with a near perfect start to get him in the front group with the big boys. Price continues to get better each race and we are very proud of him and his 3rd place finish.

Jason Davis also raced twice Masters 35+ 1-4 and Cat 3. Jason said, both races averaged around 27mph, but were for the most part pretty safe. Obviously disappointed with two mid-pack finishes on the day, but he kept the rubber side down and lived to race another day.

Graham Gillis and Jason raced Cat 3 together, the plan was to work together to set up a break and take the win. There were several GA teams up there looking to claim the State Championship jersey and obviously did not want some Floridians coming in and spoiling the party. After a hard fought race Graham and Jason had to settle for a mid-pack finish.
