We had a great two days of racing down in beautiful Bartow FL. It was the inaugural voyage of the RedEye Velo trailer and it was a hit. I got to give several tours and received lots of complements. It definitely made an impression and made a statement that RedEye Velo was here to race.
RedEye Velo had eight juniors racing, for three of them it was their first race experience. Pete Butler raced the Saturday Road Race and I raced twice both days.
SATURDAY ROAD RACE
Everyone had a great time and we had a lot of fun. The road race was flat and fast with the Cat 3/4 field averaging 26.5MPH. It was Connor's first race as a Cat3 and he had a good debut with a sixth place finish. Brian finished 5th claiming the 3 points he needed to cat up to 3, but he is going to stay in Cat 4 for a while.
I raced the Masters 35+ right before I raced the Cat 3/4 and was feeling really good with about 5 miles left to go when I went with an unsuccessful break. After we got reeled in, I stayed up front looking for an opportunity at about 2.5K to go I saw my chance and attacked, I broke a decent gap and was clear until just past the 1K sign where I got caught and spit out the back.
In the Junior 11-12 race Price Edewaard came in with the group and missed the podium by about a wheel. Tyler Griffin hung tough and came in 6th.
In the Junior 13-14 race Eric "Boo" McNees claimed the top podium spot with an impressive sprint and Jackson Griffin took 3rd in his first road race.
Brian Sciba's Race report
For the road race, it was hot out, and a combined Cat 3/4/Junior field. I was able to stay near the front of the field for most of the race. I even was part of a 5 person break that stayed away for a good while, but eventually got reeled back in to the field. I dropped my nutrition bottle midway through, so I had nothing but water throughout the race. I was in good position (probably about 5th out of a 50 person field) when we came around the final corner with about 1k to go. When the field picked up speed, my legs said no. I didn't have anything for them and ended up mid pack overall and 5th in Cat 4. Respectable, but not what I had hoped for at the finish. After that I had about 40 minutes to recover and prepare for the TT. I did pretty well, finishing first in 18:52, a full two minutes ahead of second place.
SUNDAY CRIT
Sunday's crit was a lot of fun with RedEye claiming three podium spots throughout the day.
Spencer Griffin did his first bike race ever and dominated the field. We talked race strategy and he jumped on a wheel and saved his energy for the big sprint finish. Like a seasoned pro he busted it wide open in the final sprint for the win.
In the Junior 11-12 race Price Edewaard rode like a boss with it all coming down to the sprint, unfortunately he missed the podium by 0.37 seconds.
Eric and Jackson showed some amazing teamwork and strategy in the 13-14 race. After talking through the pre-race strategy designed to put Jackson on the top of the podium the boys executed it just about perfectly. Eric set up an attack for Jackson and Jackson capitalized on his teammate's sacrifice to claim the top spot. Eric would have claimed second, but he mistook the crosswalk for the finish line. LOL. It was a brilliant through at the line, just the wrong line; he ended up with a respectable 3rd.
Brian Sciba's Race Report
Raced the junior 15-18 crit. It was a super strong field with Michael Hernandez, Pfaff, DelGado…the pace was crazy. Stayed strong and had good position throughout the race. Michael road of the front, without much effort. I held wheels and stayed in good position and was part of the end sprint, knowing that there were some large teams in the field working together. Finished 5th. In the Cat 4 Crit, I was able to stay with the leaders and even bridged a few breaks. With 3 laps to go, I was in the lead, probably not where I needed to be. I moved back to about 3rd on the last lap, when the rider in front of me cut across my wheel. I had to break to avoid a crash, which dropped my back a couple of spots. Finished 5 out of a field of 27 which I will take, especially with
I continued my unimpressive crit record with two mid(ish) pack finishes.
